Review: The Ordinary Serum Foundation

With a waiting list of 25,000 dying to get their hands on this foundation, I finally bought it!

The Ordinary, from The Abnormal Beauty Company, is a range of patent-free skincare products ranging in price from $4-$15.

Late last year, they launched their latest addition: their foundations. At the extremely affordable price of $6.80, the foundations quickly earned a waiting list of 25,000 people!

Being a Canadian brand, there are multiple flagship stores in Toronto and serendipitously, there stood three in store yesterday and they just happened to be my shade.

What I got:

I got the light coverage serum foundation. The colours are divided into numbers and then a letter to indicate whether the undertones are yellow, neutral or pink. I went for the Medium shade of 2.1Y- the Y indicating it has yellow undertones. It cost $6.80. (yes, you read that correctly!)

I prefer a lighter coverage foundation during the day, particularly in a humid climate, and so am in love with this sheer finish. I prefer a heavier coverage for night and so will definitely purchase the full coverage option too.

How it went on:

I bought this slightly darker than normal colour due to it being Summer and I am heading away on vacation and want my ultra pale face (I use SPF50 every day, even in Winter) to match my somewhat tanned neck. I would definitely need a lighter colour for Winter and Spring.

Application:

It’s called a serum foundation and it literally glides onto your skin like a moisturizer. I applied it with a small stipple brush rather than my beauty blender because it’s quite watery. I didn’t want to waste any of the precious liquid from the absorption of the sponge!

How it looked:

If you need a lot of coverage, this may not be the best for you. It looked more like I had face tanner on than a thick foundation. It blended very well into my skin though. Due to combination skin and a crazy alternating climate, often my foundation is a little tricky to apply around my nose. This application was seamless.

Like I said, this colour is fine for when I am tanned but is too dark otherwise.

How it felt:

Flawless. To quote Ned Flanders, “Feels like I’m wearing nothing at all!”

Would I repurchase?

In a heartbeat. The product is also vegan and cruelty free.
